Support And Supervision of Volunteers
Staff members are always on hand to provide ongoing help and support during your time volunteering with us.
Training - All volunteers will have an induction.
The training is designed so that volunteers feel confident to support the core member, as well as be able to recognise and respond to inappropriate behaviour and hold them to account.
Our local coordinators have regular contact with the volunteers and core member, this is an essential part of the circles process. The Circle coordinator is monitoring everyone’s progress and engagement in the Circle work.
The Circles coordinator will:
- Attend all three initial planning meetings for a new Circle
- Attend the initial Circle meeting
- Attend the second Circle meeting if necessary
- Facilitate a Circle review after 6 Circle meetings. It is at this stage that the Circles coordinator can introduce individual/paired contact if all involved are ready and feel comfortable
- Conduct Circle group reviews a minimum of every three months. However, these can be more frequent if necessary
- Contact volunteers by phone/email on a regular basis and reply promptly to their calls for support and help.
- In addition to group reviews and supervision coordinators will supervise volunteers 1:1 to enable personalised support.
- Read and respond to minutes sent by volunteers with 24 hours.
Circle volunteers should be aware that there is a degree of responsibility upon them to communicate with their allocated Circle coordinator or YHLCOSA member of staff if they are experiencing problems.

- Contact with the Circle Coordinator by phone and/or email on a regular basis and a prompt reply to their contact. Circle volunteers may also call the Circles office (Priory Street, York) for advice and information. The Circle Coordinator will inform volunteers of out of hours support systems (i.e. specific contact details will be given to volunteers during the Circles set up process in the Circles Disclosure Document)
- On-going training for volunteers; volunteers will be consulted on their training needs
- Supervision is the opportunity to give and receive feedback regarding the volunteer's Circle experience
- A supportive and safe supervision environment.
